Top Day Trips

Newburyport, MA – 8.4 miles

First settled in 1635, Newburyport has a long and rich history. Located on the southern bank of the Merrimack River where it empties into the Atlantic Ocean, downtown Newburyport is quaint, picturesque, very walkable and has many top-rated restaurants, bars, cafes and shops. We recommend The Grog for pub food, Michael's Harborside for seafood on its open-air deck, The Poynt for small plates and cocktails and The DECK for casual waterfront dining and drinks. Be sure to visit Plum Island, only 3 miles away for it’s unique beaches and  beautiful sunsets.

Portsmouth, NH – 15.9 miles

Settled in 1623, Portsmouth claims to be the nation’s third-oldest city, sitting near the mouth of the short, wide Piscataqua River dividing New Hampshire and Maine. Similar to Newburyport, it’s the perfect walking town filled with shops, restaurants, bars and cafes. Our top restaurant recommendations include Row 34 for oysters and seafood, Martingale Wharf for its brunch and waterfront seating, Jumping Jay’s Fish Café for refined seafood with creative sauces in a sleek setting, and The Black Trumpet Bistro & Wine Bar, but be sure to make reservations here ahead of time.

Kittery, ME – 17 miles

Settled in 1632, Kittery has the distinction of being the oldest town in Maine. Located on the northern side of the Piscataqua River, across from Portsmouth, NH, it is the home of the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard (the nation’s oldest continuously serving Navy yard), Badger's Island, the seaside district of Kittery Point and part of the Isles of Shoals. The town is a tourist destination known for its many discount retail outlet stores and restaurants. Our top restaurant recommendations are Robert’s Maine Grille for fresh seafood and When Pigs Fly Restaurant & Pizzeria for gourmet wood-fired pizza, pasta, small plates and beer on tap.

York, ME – 24.3 miles

First settled by Europeans in 1624, York is now a well-known summer resort town. It is home to three 18-hole golf clubs, four sandy beaches and Mount Agamenticus. During summer months, residents and tourists crowd Short Sands Beach as well as Long Sands Beach, more than a mile of sand stretching between York Beach and York Harbor. If you visit York, you must check the Cape Neddick Light, A.K.A Nubble Lighthouse, one of the most beautiful lighthouses in New England. It is the perfect photo opportunity and while there, be sure to grab a bite to eat at Fox’s Lobster House.

Boston, MA – 46.4 miles

Settled in 1630, Boston is the capital of Massachusetts and the most populous city in New England. It is home to 50-some colleges and esteemed institutions like Symphony Hall, the Museum of Fine Arts and Faneuil Hall still anchor the city’s hold on music, art and history. Check out the nation’s oldest public park, the 50-acre Boston Common, enjoy Italian dining in Boston’s North End, and stroll down Newbury Street for great shopping and head into the heart of Back Bay.

Portland, ME – 66.5 miles

Settled in 1632, Portland is the most populous city in Maine, with a population of 67,067 as of 2017. The Greater Portland metropolitan area is home to over half a million people, more than one-third of Maine's total population. Portland has a bit of a Brooklyn hipster vibe to it and is often buzzed-about for it’s exciting collection of restaurants, bars and breweries. It is a lobster-lover’s paradise, where waterfront industry, a dynamic local art scene and the smell of the sea make for one of the East Coast’s finest north Atlantic escapes. If you're a beer aficionado, you must visit some of Portland's best breweries, like Allagash Brewery, Bissell Brothers Brewing Co., Rising Tide Brewing Co. and Maine Mead Works, to name a few. Our #1 restaurant suggestions are Duckfat and Eventide Oyster

Must-Watch Video

Top Local Attractions

Fireworks

Hampton Beach is known for its fireworks displays held every Wednesday at 9:30 p.m. during the summer. There are a total of 17 shoots scheduled in 2018, including special displays on Memorial Day weekend, the Fourth of July, Labor Day weekend, Children’s Festival, Seafood Festival and the Volleyball Tournament. Hampton Beach fireworks are a great end to an evening with the kids or they can be the spark to kick off a night on the town. Gather the family together for some ice cream and watch as the sky lights up the beach or take your favorite person for a walk and catch the sights and sounds of a brilliant explosion.

Concerts

Every night during the summer there is entertainment on the Sea Shell Stage, with over 80 shows featuring music from the ‘50s–‘90s and beyond. There are two shows each night; the first is from 7-8 p.m. and the second is from 8:30-9:30 p.m. Get nostalgic with the music of your generation or enjoy Country Night on Thursdays. The full schedule can be found at hamptonbeach.org/events/seashell-stage-nightly-shows. If you’re into the music or comedy scene, then we highly recommend you check out the Hampton Beach Casino Ballroom schedule. The “Ballroom” is a seasonal live music and comedy venue located on the main boardwalk and is open from April to November with upward of 70 highly anticipated shows.

Casinos

Located in Seabrook, NH, The Brook, is the Seacoast’s premier destination for casino gaming and pari-mutuel wagering, and home to New Hampshire’s only retail sportsbook location, The DraftKings Sportsbook at The Brook. After a comprehensive remodel, and addition of hundreds of exciting gaming machines, The Brook is your year-round entertainment hub. Whether it’s cards and football with your buddies or brunch with the girls on the all-new outdoor Deck, it’s time to come see what all the excitement is about… Additionally there are two smaller casinos on the Hampton Beach boardwalk (1) Ocean Gaming, walking distance from the condo, offering blackjack, roulette, craps, digital games, food and drinks and (2) The Poker Room at One Lafayette, which is well-known for its nightly poker games - cash and tournament style - in addition to its variety of table games.

Deep-sea fishing and whale-watching

There are many deep-sea fishing and whale-watching options. The two I recommend are Al Gauron Fisheries out of Hampton and Captain's Fishing Parties & Cruises, out of Newburyport. Captain’s Fishing Parties & Cruises is family owned and operated for over thirty-nine years and has grown into one of the most versatile and accommodating fleets on the North Shore. They offer whale watching, fishing, sunset cruises, charters and more.

Breweries

To many people’s surprise, the Seacoast area is an up-and-coming brewery destination. Hampton, Newburyport and Portsmouth all boast a variety of unique breweries with delicious craft beers to try on location or to bring back home. Favorites include Smuttynose Brewery in Hampton, NH, Riverwalk Brewing in Newburyport, MA and Redhook Brewery in Portsmouth, NH

Surfing

Hampton Beach is home to a large and dedicated surfing community and is great for seasoned surfers or beginners. Check out Cinnamon Rainbows Surf Shop – an authentic surf shop on North Hampton Beach. At Cinnamon Rainbows, you can get everything from surfing lessons and equipment rentals to fun gear, cool tees and hot swimsuits. Head to “The Wall” at Hampton Beach to see a lineup of SUVs and colorful surf boards with dozens of surfers in their wet suits. Continue up the coast to Jenness Beach and Wallis Sands and you’ll see the same thing whether it’s January or July.

Drive the Scenic Route 1A North

Located Route 1A hugs the coastline directly after you cross into the NH border, offering unobstructed views of the ocean. It’s a pleasant drive with beach towns and million-dollar beach houses lining the entire coastline until Odiorne State Park in Rye. The drive offers several must-stop picturesque locations including Fox Hill Point, Rye Harbor, Sawyers Beach, Jenness State Beach and Petey’s Summertime Seafood, which is one of the most popular seafood restaurants along the Seacoast, for good reason. As you continue north of Rye, consider taking Route 1B into New Castle for the most dramatic approach into Portsmouth, NH and Kittery, ME.

Sandy Point State Reservation

Located at the southern tip of Plum Island, Sandy Point stretches 77 acres. It features a beautiful pristine coastal beaches, great for swimming and sunbathing. It’s open from sunrise to sunset, there is free parking available for up to 50 cars and the Reservation closes temporarily when the lot is full. The reservation is managed by the Department of Conservation and Recreation and is an important nesting area for the piping plover and the least tern. Access to the reservation is through the adjoining Parker River National Wildlife Refuge.

Top Local Restaurants, Bars & Cafes

Bernie’s Beach Bar

A Hampton Beach favorite, Bernie’s Beach Bar is often busy and has the largest deck on the strip, offering stunning views, great food, fresh fruit cocktails, a solid beer menu and nightly music.

The Goat

The Goat is a cowboy-themed tavern offering American comfort food, whiskey and regular live country music. It serves breakfast, lunch and dinner and although all the meals are delicious, people rave about their breakfast. Our favorite deal is the two burgers for the price of one, every Monday and Tuesday.

Wally’s Pub

Wally’s is a laid-back bar that has a very casual, local feel to it. The crowd is wide-ranging, with seafood, pub grub and drink specials served daily. If you’re looking for a game of pool or darts, Wally’s has you covered. P.S., it is also known for hosting some of the best concerts in the area.

L Street Tavern

Come as a Stranger, Leave as a Friend” is L Street Tavern’s motto. With inside and outside bars/dining, L Street Tavern is a great spot for a drink, delicious pub food, live music and Karaoke.

Sea Ketch Restaurant

The Sea Ketch is open all day for breakfast, lunch and dinner. With multiple decks that offer beautiful views of Hampton Beach, it serves fresh seafood, angus steaks, hand-made sandwiches, quality salads and a children’s menu.

Ron’s Landing

Ron's Landing is a restored 1920's home. This elegant, two-story restaurant features spectacular oceanfront dining and specializes in fresh seafood, a variety of steaks, chicken, veal and pasta. Ron's Landing also offers an extensive award winning wine list and full service lounge. Reserve seating on their second floor for great views of the beach!

Cristy’s Beach Pizza

Founded in 1946, Cristy’s Beach Pizza, known more commonly by the locals as “beach pizza” is not your average za. The pizza itself is about as basic as it gets. Super-thin crust, the perfect amount of tomato sauce, and finished with a light sprinkling of mozzarella. Order by the slice or indulge in a whole box!

Flamingo’s Coffee Bar

Located on B Street, Flamingo’s Coffee Bar opened it’s doors for business in the summer of 2021, and has quickly established itself as the most unique beachside cafe, open year-round. Specialty coffees, locally sourced foods for breakfast and lunch, and a great spot to relax, read or open up the laptop.

Marky’s Lobster Pool (Seabrook)

Located in Seabrook, NH, Marky’s has been serving traditional seafood to locals and visitors since 1971, offering a variety of fried seafood, fresh lobster, clams, mussels, shrimp and scallops, as well as crisp garden salads, burgers and homemade bisque, fish and clam chowder.

Brown’s Lobster Pound (Seabrook)

Located across the street from Marky’s, Brown’s has been In operation since 1948 and has a very similar menu as Marky’s – fresh seafood, lobster, clams, mussels etc. One big difference is that Brown’s is BYOB – You may bring your own beer and wine. For decades, the debate has raged on: Who's better – Marky's or Brown's? To be honest, it comes down to personal preference – both offer a nice casual seafood dining experience and we frequent both in the summer.

The Deck (Salisbury)

The DECK is a seasonal open-air bar and restaurant known for their burgers, seafood and tropical cocktails with stunning views of the Merrimack River. Their selection of cocktails, local brews and famous rum buckets will keep you cool. They offer complimentary valet service and live entertainment all summer long.

Mad Martha’s (Plum Island)

On Plum Island, just steps from the beach, is a little seaside shack you might not even notice. It is a house, converted into a restaurant called Mad Martha’s, which customers can’t get enough of. Mad Martha’s is a cozy breakfast joint sitting 36 people, it’s open until 2pm and they serve a unique and authentic variety of foods and daily specials. It’s the perfect way to start your day before heading to the beach. BYOB is highly recommended.

Bob’s Lobster (Plum Island)

Bob’s Lobster is a one-stop shop for fried seafood, clam chowder, Lobster poutine and award-winning Lobster rolls. Stop by and pick up a clam bake to take to the beach, or eat at one of the no frills picnic tables.
